The Professional Practice component of the Legal Studies at Illinois State University provides students with an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to real world professional experience. It also allows them to observe and participate in the legal profession they are giving consideration to joining. The specific tasks involved vary from one placement to another, but generally consist of some combination of legal research, interviewing and other investigative duties, and drafting of legal documents. An intern may work part-time or full-time and may or may not receive monetary compensation for that work. When part-time work is involved the amount of academic credit received is based on a ratio of one credit for every 45 hours worked. Students with part-time internships are responsible for coordinating their class schedules with a work schedule that is agreeable to the agency accepting them as interns.
